Buttermere from Dalegarth  -  Lake District

I had made many trips to Buttermere in the Lake District over the years without finding what I thought was a good composition. However on this occasion I couldn't believe my luck. The boat was actually there, and with Haystacks reflected in the still water and the whole framed by the fresh spring leaves - I knew this lakeland scene was it.

Across Derwentwater to Cat Bells  -  Lake District

Looking towards Cat Bells from behind Friar's Crag, the idea of this Lakeland painting was to play the blues against the golden autumn tints. Cat Bells is a shapely little fell and not too demanding, it is often walked by families with young children.

River Derwent, Grange in Borrowdale  -  Lake District
Many paintings have been produced over the years of this classic subject, it is one of the best loved Lakeland scenes: especially attractive in spring before the bracken looses its warm russet hues and the trees are not so leafy.

Sunset Over Coniston Water - Lake District
The sun is setting behind the Coniston Fells, with Dow Crag and The Old Man of Coniston quite prominent. This lakeland scene was painted from the eastern shore of Coniston Water.

Grasmere from Dale End  -  Lake District
In the very heart of Lakeland, Grasmere is perhaps Laleland 's most picturesque lake. This picture was painted from above the west shore and looks towards the distinctive Helm Crag (left of the island).

Calm Evening Grasmere  -  Lake District.

Painted from the shore below Loughrigg, lookng towards the prominent Helm Crag, this Lakeland picture was completed with a very limited palette. I wanted to emphasize the intensity of the deep blues.

Great Langdale is one of the most popular valleys in Lakeland. This autumnal picture, which was one of my first paintings of the area, was painted with a very limited palette; just four colours.

Looking over High Wray Farm to the head of Lake Windermere with Ambleside beyond, Wray castle and Wray church appear over the trees as if from a Rupert story. Red Screes and Fairfield are the prominent mountains in the background of this lakeland picture.

Rydal Water  -  Lake District

At the foot of the lake in early summer, looking towards Silver How. Rydal Water, close to Grasmere is in the very heart of Lakeland and like Grasmere has associations with William Wordsworth.

Bluebells, Brathay Woods  -  Lake District

In springtime the old woodlands of Lakeland are carpeted with a purple mist of bluebells. This wood between Clappersgate and Brathay spans quite a large area and is criss-crossed by a maze of footpaths. Maps are virtually useless here, but no-matter, there's no hurry, the bluebells are the best I've ever seen.

Haystacks was Wainwright's favourite Lakeland mountain, mainly because of the views to the surrounding higher mountains. This painting takes in a view down the valley to the lakes of Buttermere and Crummack Water.

Most of my pictures are painted with oil paint, but here I used watercolour, painting swiftly without even any drawing. As the darkness descended it became increasingly difficult to see. The walk back to Grasmere was dodgy to say the least.

Wastwatwer Screes  -  Lake District

I sometimes like to use a broader technique in my paintings, as I did here to capture the ruggedness of this subject; mixing sand in the paint to give texture and to represent the boulders on the lower slopes. This is the deepest lake in England and is often a dark rich colour. There is always an indescribable atmosphere here, whatever the weather.

Towards Elterwater  -  Lake District

A popular Lake District walk from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater passes through this wood near the lake. The moss covered boulders are unexpectedly large and, from a distance with a certain trick of the light can appear to be levitating.
